Welcome to the website of the ENPA Section Forli-Cesena. ENPA, the Italian national board for the animal protection, is the main and the oldest protective association in Italy. Established in 1871 by Giuseppe Garibaldi, Enpa carries out its activities through all those sectors aimed to the safeguard and well being of animals.

Our cat shelter in Cesena relies completely on volunteers and donations made by the inhabitants of Cesena. For over 11 years the shelter was housed in the ruines of an old slaughterhouse (!) and the walls and ceilings were crumbling down and there was no heating and no windows.

By the end of June 2006 we have had to move out of the shelter because the Cesena city council has decided to transform the complex into a student center for the university. Because their was no money available for the new shelter that was promised to us by the city councel we spent a few more years in an abandoned house in the countryside in very poor conditions.. 

Finally on the 4th of April 2009 we inaugurated the new cat shelter and a few months later we were ready to move in. The new shelter is a big improvement but unfortunately so many people refuse to neuter their cats and the shelter is already to small for all the abandoned cats we take in yearly.

Every day one of our volunteers comes to the shelter to feed the cats, give them their medication if required and to clean. We follow the strategy of "TNR" Trap, Neuter and Return for the abandoned and feral cats that pass through the shelter each year but still it seems that their number is increasing instead of decreasing. Every Saturday we have a stand on the market where we try to have the cats adopted and raise money.

We are trying hard to raise funds in all kinds of ways but is difficult while all the money we collect is almost spent immediately on food, medicines and veterinary costs. Almost 800 cats pass through the shelter each year and so far we manage to sterilize, cure and have them all adopted or returned tho their colony.
